We are transitioning from the traditional Citizens Police Academy format to a new community open house model designed to encourage broader participation and accessibility for community members.
This page will remain active to preserve the history of the Citizens Police Academy program and recognize past alumni.
For many years, the West Hennepin Public Safety Department’s Citizens Police Academy served as a valuable opportunity for community members to gain firsthand knowledge of law enforcement operations, department procedures, training, and public safety challenges. The program brought together residents, officers, government officials, and staff through an 8-week interactive academy designed to strengthen understanding, transparency, and community relationships.
The Citizens Police Academy traditionally consisted of a FREE 24-hour block of instruction sponsored by the Crime Fund, with participants meeting one evening per week over the course of eight weeks. Throughout the years, participants experienced both classroom instruction and hands-on demonstrations covering a wide variety of topics including patrol operations, DWI and traffic enforcement, investigations, dispatch operations, use of force, emergency response, personal and home security, courtroom procedures, and police technology and equipment.
The program also provided opportunities for participants to interact directly with officers, staff, and local government representatives while learning how the department serves the communities of Maple Plain and Independence.
The Citizens Police Academy has been an important part of WHPSD’s community engagement efforts, and we remain proud of the many residents who participated over the years. This page and the associated alumni photographs will remain available to preserve the history and success of the program and recognize the many community members who took part in the academy experience.
As community schedules and participation trends have evolved, WHPSD recognized that the multi-week commitment required for the traditional academy format could make attendance difficult for many residents and families. In an effort to make community engagement opportunities more accessible, flexible, and inclusive, the department is transitioning away from the traditional multi-week Citizens Academy model and toward a new Community Open House and Engagement format.
This new initiative will allow more residents to participate without the extended time commitment while still providing meaningful opportunities to learn about the department, interact with officers and staff, explore department equipment and technology, and better understand the services WHPSD provides to the community. The updated format is intended to create a more flexible, family-friendly, and interactive experience that encourages broader community involvement and participation.
Additional information regarding upcoming community engagement events, open houses, demonstrations, and educational opportunities will be announced in the future. West Hennepin Public Safety remains committed to transparency, education, and strengthening partnerships with the communities we proudly serve.
